Three Riverites were treated to a reading of three works at our last playreading at Maggie's Place. Cathy Lawrence, director and actor, reports back...
Our playreading on Wednesday 20th July consisted of 3 short one-acts plays: The Still Alarm by George S Kaufman, Carwash by Louis Phillips and a new work written by one of our long serving members, Pasqualina Dakin. The Still Alarm is an absurdist piece written by Kaufman in his usual style which was so often brought to life by the Marx Brothers. In order to heighten the ridiculous nature of the play the four male parts where all read by females. The 10 minute vignette really needs to be acted but the audience were still able to catch a sense of its absurdity. Carwash explores the reactions of a car owner when his expensive car is 'lost' in an automated carwash. Drawing on the UFO spotting themes of the 70's it questions the established laws of physics and plays with the mind. The audience appreciated the humour of the piece and the interaction between the characters brought to life by Beth, Josh and Pat. Pasqualina Dakin's play is based around the reminiscing of two sisters as they sort through the chest of draws which belonged to their late mother. This gentle play explores the sisters relationship with their mother and with each other, it was sensitively read by Bek and Val. Thanks to all the readers who read various parts; Beth Geoghegan, Josh Skeat, Pat Woods, Pauline Robson, Bek Phillips, Val Tinmouth and Cathy Lawrence.
