PLAYREADING
Three River Theatre are thrilled to present a play reading of RISING WATER by Tim Winton (Act One only) Directed by Cameron Hindrum
Living aboard neighbouring boats in a crowded marina, Col, Baxter and Jackie are middle-aged fringe-dwellers. Each of them nurses secret wounds and anxieties, and although their vessels are ocean-going craft, none seems likely to ever leave the safe confines of the harbour. They are hiding from the world behind and beyond.
On Australia Day, drunk, lost and angry, a young English backpacker called Dee turns up on the jetty and her arrival unleashes chaos. Suddenly no secret is safe, nothing is fixed. As the nation celebrates, the cosy fantasy of safety from the past is blown open in a funny, bitter torrent of loose talk.
June 29th at 7pm at our favourite Red Dove Cafe in the Pilgrim complex on Patterson Street - free to members and $5 for non members.
We would love to have you involved in the Three River Theatre season in 2023!

The Anarchists Have Left the Building
Huge thanks to everyone who came along to support us (some more than once--it was that sort of show!) We are passionate about presenting quality live theatre in Launceston, as a part of dynamic and diverse community, and we were thrilled to present this classic political farce for Launceston's audiences. Our vast gratitude goes to Troy Ridgway and his amazing cast and crew for their excellent performances and commitment to presenting such an enjoyable (and provocative) play. Thanks to Leigh Oswin, Gabe Walton-Clear, Jack Oates-Pryor, Robbie Bleakley, Matt Harris, Lucy Pullen, Eva Lawrence, Lilly Amos and Ashley Eyles.
Accidental Death of an Anarchist - By Dario Fo
Translated by Ed Emery. Directed by Troy Ridgway
A play as absurd and paranoid as the times in which we live. Corruption, it is everywhere and just that little bit silly.
A man has fallen to his death from a police station window. Did he jump or was he pushed? The cops want a cover up, but first they have to contend with an unlikely detective – a certified lunatic with a knack for impersonation.
Written by Italian Nobel laureate Dario Fo in 1970, this farce with a political sting in its tail has become an absurdist classic. It’s a glorious battle of the individual against the establishment, of underdog against overlord, of anarchy against tyranny. Contemporised, this translation of the classic farce proves that even fifty years on it is a play that still holds relevance.
It’s so funny, resistance is futile... [a] rare thing, a political farce that is genuinely funny while also making a serious political point.

Three River Theatre presented SUDAN & NO VELVET DIVORCE
A Duo of One Act Plays
SUDAN by Christine Davey - Directed by Jonathan Pedler
Starring Peter McCallum, Caitlin McCarthy and Olivia Brodzinski
Sudan tells the story of the last of the last surviving male white rhinoceros, portrayed as an ageing male patient at a medical facility who is on the verge of a physical breakdown. With him are Frank, his nurse, who looks on him with compassion and love, and Cathy, his doctor, who looks on him with almost clinical detachment. The playwright, Christine Davey, has been quoted as saying “It ended up being a play about friendship, you start writing something and you think you know what it’s about and then it transforms into something else. “It went from ‘how dare we as humans cause extinction’, to the lengths we go to care about someone.”
NO VELVET DIVORCE by Jessica Montrose - Directed by Cameron Hindrum
Starring Matt Harris and Rebecca Jee
No Velvet Divorce is Tasmanian writer Jessica Montrose's debut play. It takes place over several years as Phoebe and Nick come to terms with the end of their marriage. Nick seeks validation in the arms of his new lover, while Phoebe seeks to build financial independence before embarking on a journey of renewal. Dealing with themes of redemption, recovery from trauma, reconciliation and the end of love, No Velvet Divorce deftly captures two people at their most emotionally vulnerable, exploring how they respectively find their way back to positions of apparent stability.
OF MICE AND MEN | Theatre North
John Steinbeck wrote his novella Of Mice and Men in 1937, immediately following it with his stage version, which quickly became a theatre classic. It won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Best Play in 1938, and has been performed continuously since, with the first (of many) film adaptations coming in 1939.
Set firmly in the Great Depression, Steinbeck’s tale of two landless itinerant workers explores the universality of human hopes and dreams. The play’s careful construction is like a Greek tragedy, and the issues it uncompromisingly raises, from economic disenfranchisement to disability to racism and sexism are as relevant today as they were when the play was written. The language and the action, both brutally of their time, can be confronting, but it remains a powerful and moving examination of the human condition not to be missed.
Launceston’s Three River Theatre has assembled a stellar cast to bring the show to life, including Cameron Hindrum, Travis Hennessy, Michael Edgar, Jonathan Pedler, Ryan Politis, Eleanore Knox, Matt Taylor, Leigh Oswin, Freddie Brown and Thanalert Ellen.
Directed by Stan Gottschalk.

Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was first staged in 1962. The play depicts the complexities, bitterness and passion in the marriage of George and Martha; and invites the audience to ‘eavesdrop’ when they invite newlyweds Nick and Honey into their web of lies and deceit.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? won both the Tony Award in 1963, as well as the New York Drama Critic’s Circle award in 1962-3 for best play. It is one of America’s most frequently performed plays, but the content and global message of the play easily translates to any marriage, in any country, at any time.
After the hugely successful and award-winning season of Our Town, Three River Theatre is thrilled to have Jan Gluszyk bring this American classic to the IO Performance Space.
