Cathy Lawrence: Our Hero

21/3/2017

We were delighted that the good folk at the Tasmanian Theatre Awards continued with the tradition of allowing companies to celebrate one of their number as a "Local Hero".  You may recall Stan Gottschalk (2015) and Rebecca Phillips (2016) have been Heroes previously.

This year - we were stoked to celebrate the Cathy Lawrence and her tremendous contributions to Three River.  Here is the text which accompanied her nomination.

"In the fifteen years that Cathy has been a part of Three River Theatre she has served in every imaginable capacity; she has acted for us in The Importance of Being Earnest, Little Murders and in numerous one-act plays. She then turned her hand to directing, working as Assistant Director for The Crucible, and as co-director for Black Comedy and God of Carnage, directing Three River’s contribution to Tamar Tidings and also Straws in the Wind (written by a Three River member) at the Deloraine Drama Festival, as well as directing several shows for the Company’s Coffee House Play Reading Series.

She has also developed her skills in theatre lighting, learning the technical intricacies of modern electronic lighting systems, both operating and assisting in the lighting design for Waiting for Godot, A Mad Affair, and Twelve Angry Men.

Whenever there is a job to be done, Cathy is one of the first to step and volunteer to do it.  Whenever the Company has a play reading, meeting, fund-raiser or general party, she is always leading the charge.  Whenever the less-glamorous tasks need attention, she has stepped up and put the Company first.

And if that were not enough, she has been a member of the Three River Theatre Committee since 2010, serving as  Treasurer for the past five years.  Her eye for detail, ready laugh and infinite patience make her arguably the best Treasurer the company's had.

Community theatre would not exist without the huge efforts of people like Cathy who give freely of their time and skill, and give it with the grace and dedication that make the process the pleasure that it is supposed to be.  We’ll charge our glasses and raise a toast to Cathy – it is our great pleasure to officially name her our Hero."
